My daughter dropped her Windows phone Monday outside a restaurant after we had lunch and the its screen shattered. So, after work, she bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 to replace it along with another S5 for her hubby. Monday evening she filmed a video of her daughter (she's a spitting image of my daughter) and sent it to me. Well, the video quality sucked. It was compressed and raggedy. It was worse then videos sent to me when she used an iPhone. I reached the conclusion if I want quality videos of my granddaughter, I need to be using the same platform the video was created on. It pained me tremendously  to walk into that store yesterday and buy the white LG G3 freaking Android phone. I swore for years that I would never use Android but seeing vids of Alayna means more to me than my hated of Google. Anyway, the hardware aspect of the phone is sweet but I still hate Android. I really miss the Nokia 1520's Live Tiles. I'll keep my beloved 1520 for a backup phone but I miss using it already. i ordered a couple Spigen cases for the G3 today so I guess I'm pretty much married to the reality of using Android now. GRRRRRRR! Great phone, terrible OS.

BTW, the soon to be released Samsung Note Edge is a kick ass phone.

AT&T John?

on Nov 13, 2014

Well one part of your nick is right... and that'd be the first part.

A fechen Android phone... really?  Hehe, and the 2nd part should be Hatter.

I mean, what the fech are we gonna do with you?

You know, of course, that the smart man woulda got the daughter to buy a Nokia... er, Microsoft phone with Win 8.1 on it, dontcha?

Mad ain't the word fer it, try fechen crazy with bells on.

And about now you should be singing: They're coming to take me away hoho, he he, ha ha.... to the funny farm with those nice young men in their clean white coats, they're coming to take me awaaaaaay......

Yup, I have to say that I'm disappointed - a fechen Android phone? - and I'll miss those Nokia Lumia chats we used to have, that we didn't care that IOS and Android had more apps; that Cortana made up for all that; that Live Tiles are superior to anything they do... and all that stuff.  BTW, I have Cortana now... had it for a while and I continually thumb my nose at Apple and Google for being also rans but never passed the post.

Anyway, boo hoo hoo hoo.   I haven't been this sad since Dolly Parton vowed she'd never bare her chest in movies, on TV, in music film clip... publicly.  Orright, maybe it's not as bad as that, but it's darned close.

I mean, surely there's gotta be another way... like take that Android POS back and buy your daugther a Windows phone?  At least that way you can go back to your beloved 1520 and not have to cry yourself to sleep every night, or have nightmares about Android.

You see, I am thinking about your well being and sanity.

Now I recommend you take a couple of aspirin and lay down for a while, like have a bit of a snooze and a rethink.  I'm sure you'll wake up feeling all the better for it and want to embrace that familiar and ever faithful 1520 'til the cows come home.

yeah, Tom, AT&T. Have you ever noticed the AT&T signal in Peru is much, much better than it is in Logan? In Peru, I get full bars and in Logan, I get only one or two bars. AT&T has told me that will be remedied when LTE is turned on around here. I get LTE for about 1 1/2 milles on 24 just outside of Logan on my way to Peru but not while in Logan. It's nice to go to Kokomo and see LTE instead of 4G. I guess I shouldn't complain since I was using an iPhone 3 when all we had around here was Edge and they told us for two years 3G was coming soon.

Starkers, I still have my 1520 and I carry it with me. It isn't going anywhere. And you're right, Live Tiles is far superior to anything iOS and Android offer. Cortana kills Siri and OK Google if you ask me. Who cares about he app aspect of it, anyway? How many weather apps does a person need? Besides, the Amazing Weather app on my 1520 is superior to the weather widget I have on the Droid phone.  Android doesn't have the MS Solitaire Collection app, so they fail big time there. Droid doesn't have MS Office....another fail.

Jessi liked her Windows phone but her husband talked her into switching to Droid. He had been a Droid user before and never acclimated himself to WP.

I've been singing that 'take me away' song for decades. My ex still sings that to me at times, along with our kids. The last time was when I said something bizarre while we were amongst the Redwoods in California. Folks, if you haven't been there to see those trees, you must get there before you pass. Mother Nature did something right there. Also, driving on the Pacific Coast Highway will allow you to see some gorgeous scenery. I can't wait to go back next year.

Last night I had a question about the Droid OS so i went back to the store to ask somebody who might actually know the answer. Well, they were either really busy or understaffed so I had to wait awhile. I noticed a couple looking at the Windows phones display after examining the Samsung Droid phones on display and started talking to them.  They were eligible to upgrade from their iPhone 4S devices. Let's put it this way, they walked out of there with a white 1520 and a green 1520 for themselves and 830s for their two kids. The manager that store has now said I should apply for a job. HAHA. She uses a 1520. She told me they have trouble selling Windows phones because people are afraid of the OS. To me, the WP OS is the superior OS.

Anyway, I love the form factor of the LG G3 but Android and I don't see eye to eye at all. It may be a very contentious relationship if I keep the phone past the 14 day return period.

Yep, same thing here John, but Verizon, Sprint and other carriers suck for signal here in Peru, so AT&T is the only choice really.

Good to hear old mate, good to hear.  As for the Californian redwoods, well yeah, I'd love to see them up close and personal.  Seeing them in documentaries just doesn't capture the enormity and splendour of them, no matter how good the filming or how big the screen.  In fact, if I ever made it to the US, I don't know that I'd bother too much with the big cities, not when there are so many natural wonders to see.  Then there's so much early history to take in that I'd probably run out of time to spend too much time in the cities anyhow., though I would like to see Washington DC from a historical point of view.

I was never a big city person to begin with, so I wouldn't feel like I missed anything if I didn't get to LA, New York, etc, though I would feel like I missed something if I missed out on Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and other natural wonders.

And being that quite a few people have questioned my sanity over the years, 'They're Coming to Take Me away' is a song I've frequently turned to.  I've also sung it when others have had a lapse of reason and or sanity... just to let them know that I'm not alone.

Anyway, good on you for helping those people pick out decent phones for themselves and kids. I've helped a few people to decide on Nokia Lumias since I got my 820 and just about all of them thanked me later for the tip/advice, etc.  A couple weren't so pleased and went back to iPhones, but neither gave the Windows phone a fair chance.  One bloke took less than a week and the other just over a week to swap back.  For mine they were idiots, but there was no point telling them they'd just wasted a bunch of cash.

Oh well, some people can't be helped.

Hey Tom! The eastern half of Logan has LTE as of Tuesday, Where I'm at is still on 4G though. Does Peru have LTE now?

Starkers, the entire family has gone Android now. My ex bought an LG G3 Vigor Wednesday. AS of 30 minutes ago, it still hasn't gone out the window. My son out in California told me this morning he was planning on getting a Samsung Note 4 today (Thursday). I have yet to speak to him since then but I assume he got it. Don't fret, I still carry my trusty 1520 with me everywhere I go. I'm taking my LG Pad 7 back Friday. I don't need another $10 a month on my bill for its data plan especially I'd never use except when on wifi. I do like the tablet though. I may have to get an 8.3 inch, wifi only version of it in white after Christmas. I may sell my iPad Air after that since I RARELY use it.

They've all gone mad... mad, I tell you.

You're a bit slow, aren't ya!  No helping hand?  And no Nokia Lumia catalogue handy on the coffee table nearby?

I dunno, John, this getting old is a bitch, ain't it!  you know what you want 'em to do, but you just don't feel like bossing around the people who are choosing your nursing home, LOL!!!

MadDeez

Don't fret, I still carry my trusty 1520 with me everywhere I go.

That's good to hear.  Not like that Island Dog traitor, going back to an iPhone n' all.

You'll never know how hurt and disappointed I was when I read that, for it was he who got me into the Nokia Lumias to begin with, telling everyone it was the best phone he'd ever owned.  I mean, I'm glad he put up that thread, cos I got the best phone I ever owned because of it, a Lumia 820, but there's no way on Earth I'm following him over to one of those crApple iPhones.  No siree!  It'd be a cold day in Hell before I got me one of those.

As for a tablet, I'm still using my cheapy Android device.  It sort of mostly does what I want but I'd really prefer a Windows 8 tablet, when I decide which one I'd like and can afford it.  I have a couple of other priorities at the moment, however, so it has to go on the back burner for a while longer yet.

Yo Pas, I'll leave the phone talk alone but your right about those big Redwoods.  They have a 2 lane hwy. going threw a big Redwood.  Damn they are big and a great site to see.

I'll keep my Samsung G-S4.

Nope, not yet John. 4G, but not LTE yet.

Nothing wrong with androids.....they dream of electric sheep after all....

Nope not alot wrong with an Android... nothing a short, sharp shock with a cattle prod wouldn't fix.

Seriously, though, it is each to his or her own at the end of the day. I like my Nokia Lumia 820 Windows phone, and others like their Android devices or their iPhone, and good on them, but there's nowt wrong with a bit of friendly phone rivalry between consenting adults.

on Nov 22, 2014

yeah, wom, those redwoods are amazing. i thoroughly enjoyed every second while we were in that forest. those trees are so gorgeous and to think they're hundreds of, maybe even a thousand,  years old just makes them more amazing. i was california only 6 days but i'd love to live there just to se the beauty of nature out there. i understand completely why my son loves it there since he can see it every day. as a matter of fact, he camps or hikes almost every weekend with a few of his friends.

starkers, give me live tiles over standard static icons any day! to me, the added costs of having the droid phone is worth it after seeing the vids of Alayna that my kid sent me. they were not compressed a bit like they were after being sent to my 1520. google, microsoft, and apple need to get their heads out of their asses and standardize the way files are sent between the three operating systems.

i called at&t yesterday to complain about the battery life of the G3 versus the 1520. i'm used to having to charge the 1520 every two or three days. the G3 battery is lasting only about 12 hours and i'm not using the phone heavily. the rep said he'd send a new battery to me because he thinks the current one isn't charging fully. i learned yesterday afternoon that a friend of mine in Peru has the G3 and his battery holds a charge for the full day with no issues and i'm certain he uses his phone more than i do mine.

what's this about counting electric sheep?

on Nov 22, 2014

Yeah, live tiles are so much better than static tiles, that's why I went with a Windows phone.  I had a look at iphones and Android devices while I was in the store, but none of them held a candle to the Lumia 820, and not just for the live tiles. I personally felt the iPhone was too thin and flimsy for my liking, and many of the Android units didn't feel alot better at the time, whereas the 820 felt solid and sturdy to get grip of, like it was built for a mans hand.  All this thin and lightweight means nothing to me... I want something I can feel in my hand, not a feather.

As for standard video and photo formats across the platforms, very well said.  They really do need to extract their craniums from their rectums and make it uniform across the board, to make it easier for all users of all platforms to share photos and videos with anyone and everyone they so desire... cos yeah, this platform/brand exclusivity is getting old and tiresome.

And you give to them AT&T con artists wot could do it cheaper if not for the CEO's multi-million dollar pay cheque... bore it right into 'em if you don't get satisfaction forthwith.  Ya never know, they might even send a spare battery as well, just to alleviate your displeasure.

As for counting electric sheep, that'd be Jafo's wacky idea... was probably another white wine night.

I wonder if you still loved Lumia 800, if you by accident happened to own that one instead of 820. Given the fact it lost its Skype functionality thanks to very clever decision by all-mighty Microsoft.
